Installing double curtain rod brackets is similar to installing single curtain rod brackets. However, they require more precision and measuring to ensure they hang straight. The hardware should be strong enough to support the weight of two sets of draperies.

You can purchase installation kits to hang double curtain rods, but they can be pricey and often include materials you already own.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to hang double curtain rods correctly with household tools.

Step 1: Measure Your Curtains
Clean and inspect the window and frame for leaks and damage. Use this opportunity to touch up the paint and caulk around the window frame and repair any existing damage to your drywall.

First, decide on your ideal curtain length and placement:

Measure the height from the floor to the top of your window frame
Measure the depth of your window
Measure the width of your windows.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies & Tools

Step 3: Prepare the Window Space
Before you begin the installation, double-check your window:

Inspect the window and frame for leaks and damage
Touch up the paint and caulk around the window frame if necessary
Repair any existing damage to your drywall from old hardware
Wash your window glass for a sparkling clean start

Step 4: Install Your Double Curtain Rod Brackets
Deciding where to install your double curtain rod brackets requires the following measuring and placement steps.

Determine bracket placement: Measure the height where you want your curtain panels to hang. Use a pencil and tape measure to mark curtain bracket placements on the wall. Use a level to line up the pencil markings so the curtain rod hangs evenly.
Mark the screw hole placement: Starting with the right side, place the bracket over the center of the mark. Use a level and pencil to mark the holes where the screws will go.
Drill and secure the bracket: Use a stud finder to determine if you need a screw and anchor (if there isn’t a stud) or just screws (if there is a stud available). Pre-drill holes for the screws with a 1/8″ bit. Insert the screws into the holes, leaving 1/4″ of the screw sticking out. Slide the bracket onto the screws and tighten the screws to secure the bracket to the frame.
Level and secure the other bracket: Place the curtain rod into the right bracket. Use a level to determine the placement of the left bracket. Repeat steps 2-3 to secure the bracket to the frame.

Step 5: Hang Your Curtains
Add your sheer curtain panels to the ⅝-inch curtain rod. Place the curtain rod and sheers into the smaller curtain rod brackets.

Then, add your drapes or exterior curtain panels to the 1-inch curtain rod. Place the curtain rod into the larger curtain rod brackets.
